What is a welcome?

Welcome is what you say when someone has just entered your space — space of living, work, recreation, or otherwise. More than what you say, welcome can be how you act — making others feel at home. A warm smile, a word of kindness, an act of service. A spirit of welcome says, “I’m glad you’re here. What can I do for you?” The heart of hospitality is a willingness to welcome others into your life. This spirit of welcome is vital in building lasting friendships and in forming functional business relationships.

How does one show hospitality?

Someone once put it like this: “Give a smile. Make a snack. Send a note. Invite them in.”

It really can be that simple. Greet everyone you see today with a warm and genuine “how are you today?” Share a fresh baked treat with the neighbors. Take a friend out for coffee. Write a note of appreciation, perhaps sharing with them something you’ve been studying or enjoying recently. Invite a new family at church into your home for dinner. Do everything in your power to make those around you feel that they belong, that they are loved, that they are valued and appreciated.
