An Apron’s Wonderful Uses

What can you do with an apron? Or more accurately, what does an apron do for you? How does it enhance the productivity, effectiveness, and capability of one’s life?

First of all, our aprons have a specifically time-saving feature — pockets. Use them to hold extra hair ties, your clothes pins for hanging laundry, cleaning supplies, or even the verse card you’re trying to memorize. Always within reach, use them to hold any small parts you need to access regularly.

Second, aprons at their core save us time when we wear them for dirty jobs. All that time you would’ve spent scrubbing stains out of nice clothes can be eliminated — simply because no one minds if your cute work apron has a few spots. Wash it when needed, but otherwise it’s okay if it shows some love from productive, messy projects.

I am much more apt to do what I truly need to do in order to complete a project when my clothing is protected — dive into the corner of the pantry to obtain another bag of flour, use a paint brush to touch up the corners of the foyer where many passersby have chipped it down to metal, gather fresh (and dirty) veggies from the garden and bring them in for dinner (forgot my basket, again. Got an apron? No problem). You get the picture. It’s psychological, I know, but wearing an apron frees me to willingly tackle the messy jobs at hand, because I know it won’t end in ruining my nice new top or needing to spend precious minutes scrubbing stains.

My (yes turquoise — that’s my favorite) apron has become one of my most vital pieces of fabric in the house. And I especially love that it is personalized. With personalization added, it lifts it from looking like a basic store-bought (albeit quality) piece to being a fun expression of my personality. I use it at home, and because it looks nice, I’m not ashamed to use it in public too.

Are aprons a new invention in the 21st century? I should say not! Read this poem by Robert Winthrop about a Grandma’s iconic apron.

Are aprons passé? There may still be a few
That say ‘Kiss the Cook’ when men barbeque.
For Gram they were vital, they saved her good dress
When cooking and cleaning or clearing a mess.

They dried all our tears when as children we’d cry,
And they covered our heads when we’d be feeling shy.
They served as a basket for bringing in eggs,
And aprons worked great for cleaning skinned legs.

And they worked just as well as a plastic bag could
When she gathered in apples or carried in wood.
When the nuts had been shelled and the hulls lay about,
Well, then Gram used her apron to carry them out.

And if company came unexpected one day,
The apron could quickly clear all dust away.
And the apron was great for wiping her brow;
In the pasture she’d flap it for shooing the cow.

It covered her arms when the chilly wind blew;
On the porch she would wave it, and all the men knew
To come from the field for the meal she had made
Of delicious fried chicken and cold lemonade.

When you think of recycling, remember now, please
That Grandma’s old apron could save lots of trees
If thousands of us when asked ‘Paper of plastic?’
Would say, ‘Filly my apron.’ That isn’t so drastic.
